1.1 Description 

AsTEX distribution contains emTeX, the implementation of TeX for PC by E. Mattes, the macros AMSTeX and AMSLaTeX, many Metafont and PostScript fonts, formats for using Plain TeX, LaTeX 2.09, LaTeX2e and TeXinfo with English and French, and very many other tools which facilitate the use of TeX and LaTeX, among which the assistant and the navigator AsTEX. It contains also other software of very high quality, Dview and Dviwin to display dvi files, Ghostscript and GSview to display PostScript files, Gnuplot to create scientific curves, Burgundy Editor, Emacs, MéTeX, Micro-Emacs and TeXShell to edit documents, TeX2rtf and TeX4ht to transform TeX documents to html format, Image Magick and Qv to handle images, MuPAD Light and PARI to make formal calculation, Scilab, the GNU Fortran compiler and the Slatec library of Fortran sub-routines to perform numerical calculation. All this software can be used freely within the frame of public research and educational institutions.

The software AsTEX itself is a set of programs which makes it possible to install, configure automatically and interface the other software of the distribution, and to use it comfortably starting from the assistant and the navigator AsTEX. It also includes utilities to create formats for French and other European languages automatically, and to display tables of characters of TeX and PostScript fonts.

The distribution AsTEX is made up of the software AsTEX, the assistant, the navigator and the software described above, gathered in preinstalled modules.
