4.2 Installation types

You can choose between several general or specialized installation types, according to the available room on disk and according to the software that interest you. This permits to start from a minimal installation, and to complement it when needed.

There are six general types of installation (Exec-CD, Voir/Impr, Minimal, Standard, Complements, Maximal). With these installation types, all modules of all packages, from the package that you selected, will be installed. For example, if you select the base packet and the Minimal type, the installation of Minimal type will be made for all packages. If you select the Complementary Packet Num. 2, only the modules of this package and the following packages (Numeric Calculation and Emacs) will be installed.

  1.  Exec-CD: install the minimum necessary to use the distribution in Plug & - Play mode from the CD-ROM. This option can also be used on a client PC, even though the server's files are only accessible in reading, provided the complete content of the CD-ROM has been copied on the server.
  2.  Voir/Impr: permits to see and to print some TeX or LaTeX documents already created (for ex. articles under dvi form, that you download on the network). This option occupies about 19 Mb (7 Mb for the base packet, 4 Mb for the Complementary Packet, 8 Mb for the Complementary Packet Num. 2).
  3.  Minimale: permits in addition to create documents in Plain TeX or LaTeX (about 40 Mb).
  4.  Standard: permits in addition to create and to insert scientific curves or any pictures, to use LaTeX2e and various utilities.
  5.  Complète: includes in addition the totality of the documentation to be printed.
  6.  Maximale: includes all files of the distribution, except those of the auto - installable programs (subdirectories alg, num, utils and view of the directory astexdis) and those of the directory astexdis\suppl. For the base packet, the libraries of fonts are all installed. For the Complementary Packet, the versions for DOS, Windows and OS/2 are all installed.
The specialized options permit to install the different components of the distribution individually (TeX, LaTeX, Metafont, Gnuplot, Ghostscript etc.). The options available depend on the installed package. They also permit to uninstall easily some components installed by the general types of installation and that you would not need (cf. below).

With the specialized types of installation, only the modules of the current package are installed. For example, if you select the Gnuplot type and that the base packet is the current package, the modules of Gnuplot of the base packet will be installed, but not the modules of Gnuplot of the Complementary Package.

Attention! The numbers indicated for the occupied space correspond to the sum of the size of the files installed. The really occupied space depends on the size of the partition on which you install the distribution: if your partition is of FAT 16 type, it is necessary to count between 10 % more (partition <128 Mb) and 300 % more (partition >1024 Mb) than the indicated numbers. For example, on a disk of 2 Go that is not partitioned, the maximal installation occupies more 1.2 Go whereas the total size of the files is about 620 Mo. If you have a large disk and that you omitted to partition it, using it in Plug & Play mode eliminates this inconvenience.
