5.3 The icons AsTeX dvi, AsTeX dvi color and AsTeX PS

With version 3.x, you have three standard icons, AsTeX dvi, AsTeX dvi color and AsTeX PS, to visualize your documents and portions of documents. The icon AsTeX dvi color permits to visualize the documents that contain bitmap or PostScript images in color, as well as special effects gotten with the help of the packages color, graphics and PSTricks. In principle, it is no more necessary to launch Dvips to visualize the PostScript output with Ghostscript to display documents containing PostScript pictures, or special effects bound to PostScript : everything shows off directly in Dview, from the dvi output. However, the Dview program includes some bugs  : some special effects may be rendered incorrectly, some composed characters (among the mathematical symbols) show off badly and some accentuated letters are baffled a little. If you note such a problem, use Dview for adjusting and Dvips for the definitive version of your document.

It is no more necessary either to associate the files of extension dvi and ps to the programs dviwin.exe and gsview32.exe (nor dview.exe) to use these icons. It is nevertheless convenient to do it, in order to be able to launch the appropriate previewer automatically by clicking on a dvi or ps file name, in the Windows Explorer. To do that, you must associate the program beforehand ast\ emtex\ dviwin\ dviwin.exe or ast\ astex\ dview\ dview.exe (Windows 3.x/9x/NT) or ast\emtex\dvipm.exe bin\ (OS/2) to the files with dvi extension, by means of the option Fichier (File) | Associer (Associate) of the file manager (Windows 3.x), of the option Ouvert par (Open with) | Autre (Other) (Windows 9x/NT) or Association | Nouveau nom (New name) (OS/2).

In the same way, you must associate the program ast\gs\gsview32.exe (Windows 3.x/9x/NT) or ast\ps\gvpm.exe (OS/2) to the files with extension ps as indicated above.
