7.1 Using TeX(mod. 02/05/2000)

If you work under Windows 9x/NT, the best way to use TeX is to go through assistant AsTEX. Many examples of use are given in the part starter guide of the installation manual, and in the user's manual of AsTEX.

If you work under DOS, the best way to use TeX is to go through the interface TeXShell. The various software must be launched one after the other, with the help of the corresponding options. Some examples are given in the part Starter Guide of the installation manual.

If you work under DOS+Windows 3.x or OS/2, you can use TeXShell or MicroEmacs as interface. It is convenient to have two or three windows opened permanently (depending on whether you use or not the PostScript extensions):

  1.  The window of the interface, in which you edit your documents in TeX or LaTeX. To open it, click on the icon of TeXShell or Micro-Emacs (according to the interface that you prefer).
  2.  The window to display dvi files, in which you display the result of the compilation. You open it once and for all, when beginning the session, by clicking on the icon AsTeX dvi. After every compilation, it gets automatically up to date (Windows 9x/NTx) or when you click over it (Windows 3.x).
  3.  The window to display PostScript files, in which you display the output of Dvips (if your document contains some PostScript figures). You open it when beginning the session, by clicking on the icon AsTeX PS. After every new execution of Dvips, you put it up to date by clicking on the op- tion View | Redisplay1 .
