The DELF (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française) and the DALF (Diplôme Approfondi de Langue Française) are national diplomas awarded by the French Ministry of Education, Higher Learning and Research. These diplomas officially certify that foreigners have achieved a given level of knowledge, practice and proficiency in the French language. The DELF and DALF include six independent diplomas.
The Institute of French Language of the University of Orleans is an examination centre that has been officially approved by the CIEP (Centre International d’Etudes Pédagogiques) and by the Orleans-Tours Rectorate for taking the DELF and the DALF examinations.
These diplomas are lifelong qualifications and they may not be taken again once passed. The DELF has included 4 levels while the DALF has 2. These levels are accredited by distinct certificates that reflect the standards established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR):
| CEFR | DELF/DALF | User |
| A1 | DELF A1 | Basic |
| A2 | DELF A2 | |
| B1 | DELF B1 | Independent |
| B2 | DELF B2 | |
| C1 | DALF C1 | Proficient |
| C2 | DALF C2 |
Foreign nationals and French citizens from a non-Francophone country, and who do not hold a French public secondary school education or post-secondary education diploma may be awarded the DELF or the DALF.
Four skills are evaluated for each diploma:
Each counts for 25 points. The examinations are collective except for one individual part (spoken production). The DELF and the DALF are constituted by six entirely independent diplomas. Candidates can register directly for the examination they wish to take according to their level.
The French Institute of Orléans University only offers four of the six diplomas:
