The "European Doctorate" or "Doctor Europaeus" is a label delivered by the University of Orléans.

The "European Doctorate" or "Doctor Europaeus" is a label delivered by the University of Orléans, that applies to the national doctorate degree, already recognised within the framework of the BMD system, and which helps to acknowledge the European dimension of the doctoral project. It concerns doctoral students from higher education institutions of EU member states, and is extended to other states from the European Free Trade Association (Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein).

Several conditions must be fulfilled:

  1. The doctorate must have been partly prepared during a research study period of at least three months in another European country.
  2. The permission to defend a thesis is granted according to reports written by at least three professors including two from higher education institutions from two European countries, other than the one in which the defence takes place. The advisor from the host laboratory cannot write one of the aforementioned reports.
  3. At least one of the examiners must be working for a higher education institution from a European country other than the one in which the viva voce takes place.
  4. Part of the viva voce must be done in an official language of the European Union other than the language of the country in which it takes place.
