Ozone exposure induces lung barrier biphasic injury and inflammation controlled by IL-33.

Environmental air pollution leads to the release of reactive oxygen in form of ozone, which causes irritation of the airways leading to chronic bronchitis and emphysema.Tobge D and Michaudel C with the team investigate the effect of a single ozone exposure of mice (1ppm for 1h) and found a severe biphasic epithelial injury leading to acute inflammation and airway hyperreactivity, which is neutrophil and IL-33 dependent.Future studies are ongoing to investigate the effect of chronic ozone exposure on chronic bronchitis and emphysema found in patients.
