Giovanni Battista TIEPOLO Circa 1743 Oil on canvas

The painter Tiepolo stages an episode of the mythology: the sad adventure of Apollo and Daphne, a nymph. To escape Apollo’s ardent passion for her, Daphne tries to run away. Tiepolo painted the exact moment when Apollo catches the nymph and stops her. Their balance seems fragile. Looking startled, with his eyes wide open, he witnesses the moment when Daphne starts metamorphosing into a laurel tree.
