The SNO Tourbières (Tourbières National Observation Service) or "the impact of global changes on temperate peatlands' function as carbon sinks"
The SNO Tourbières (Tourbières National Observation Service) or "the impact of global changes on temperate peatlands' function as carbon sinks"or "the impact of global changes on temperate peatlands' function as carbon sinks" is a site accredited by the CNRS' INSU.
The "Tourbières" National observation service is a long-term operational infrastructure. It is based on observing and modelling the functioning of temperate peat-lands subjected to climatic and anthropogenic disturbances.
Its ambition is to create a synergy between multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary scientific skills around 4 instrumented sites (Bernadouze, in the Midi-Pyrénées department; Frasne, in the Doubs department; La Guette, in the Cher department, and Landemarais, in the Ille et Villaine department)in order to watch and model the carbon flows between the atmosphere and the ground.
The SNO is also tasked with setting up and making available a database on carbon flows and developing experimentation by implementing protocols to manipulate water temperature and water table level.
Finally, those activities are meant to develop within an international framework through the implementation of those same experimentations along a longitudinal gradient: the SNO Tourbières, Linje Mire (Poland), and Mukhrino Field Station (West Siberia).
