Heritage(s) research area

I. General Introduction

The “Heritage(s)” research area brings together the work of researchers from the fields of private and public law, legal history, sociology and management, focusing on the three specific characteristics of heritage: “value and enhancement”, “identity and identification” and “transmission”. The enhancement of heritage, which involves protection and management, gives rise to the study of specific tools, mechanisms and institutions, such as trusts and security guarantees, not forgetting specific markers such as AOCs, brands, labels, territorial brands and, today, the digital stakes associated with them. The dimension of identity encompasses research into local or world heritage, cultural property, historic monuments and associated urban planning legislation, as well as natural or intangible heritage. Finally, the transmission of heritage includes work on the conditions for appropriating and safeguarding heritage, from private to public property, with regard to the full range of possibilities, from state ownership to easements, covenants, life insurance, legacies and inheritance... Heritage labels, the relationship between law and gardening or gastronomy, heritage engineering, trusts or PDO winegrowing are just some of the themes addressed by the collective publications of the axis' researchers, in addition to less academic and more specific productions, based on the research carried out and enabling the “general public” to benefit from it (films, mediation tools, exhibitions, etc.). Such work is partly linked to the various regional calls for projects (APR) supported by the axis, as an extension of the two master's degree specialties on heritage, themselves supported by the laboratory, one in public law (specializing in “Local management of cultural heritage”), the other in private law (specializing in “Heritage law and engineering”).

In addition, the disciplines grouped under this heading also lead to more specific and classical readings of heritage. While the history of law can follow the evolution of public institutions, standards and specialized agents, or strong heritage symbols in an eminently political reading of heritage, sociology and management look more closely at the relationship with the public and the valorization of heritage in all its forms. Public law focuses on the normativity and engineering of protection and urban planning tools, the governance of heritage bodies and the articulation of domestic and international standards. Private law also focuses its attention on the most advanced heritage management schemes, the associated strategies of players in the field, the conditions of appropriation of property from the civil code to common property, modes of assignment and heritage enhancement tools drawn from intellectual property, trademarks and appellations... with regard to the most recent heritage and cultural events. Ultimately, the “heritage” object, the granting of heritage status process (“heritagization”) and the economics associated with it will form the basis of future collective research.

APR IA LAPTER: Heritage LAbels and valorization of TERritories, in the Centre-Val de Loire region, 2022-25 [online: https://lapter.hypotheses.org/le-projet]
The LAPTER research project, co-sponsored by the Universities of Tours and Orléans, examines the place of heritage and tourism enhancement labels in territorial planning, local development and the strategies of the local and national players behind these initiatives, by delving into the mechanics of the labeling processes and their implementation, following on from the work carried out in 2016 by the CRJP. Three areas of work have been identified for this project: the relationship between labels and “hard law” tools, in particular PLUs and heritage urban planning tools; the study of labels as a “territorial resource”; and the role of labels in networking and sharing experiences between local authorities.
In addition to the partnership with CITERES, a geography laboratory in Tours, the non-academic partners in the LAPTER project include: Conseil d'architecture, d'urbanisme et de l'environnement (department 41); Syndicat mixte interrégional Mission Val de Loire, patrimoine mondial; Réseau Régional des données territoriales en Centre-Val de Loire.

The project is accompanied by a number of synthesis deliverables, scientific articles and scientific events.

APR IR “Patrimoine culturel de proximité, Bien Commun pour la construction territoriale” (PBC) 2018-2022 (with covid carryover).

The “Patrimoine culturel de proximité, bien commun pour la construction territoriale” project, co-sponsored by the Universities of Tours and Orléans, aims to assess the level of knowledge and appropriation of local heritages - both for institutions and by the region's inhabitants - to definitively transform them into common properties. This knowledge should enable local heritage to be integrated into urban planning documents and territorial transformation practices as part of a democratic approach.
Three main areas have been identified. Firstly, the project aims to increase the accuracy of heritage information, in cooperation with the regional inventory and heritage department, on the territory of several regional sites. This will be followed by the creation of a participatory heritage inventory methodology. Lastly, the implementation of this methodology will enable the information produced to be integrated into regional planning tools (PLU, SPR and SCOT) as part of a “heritage democracy” approach.
In addition to deliverables in the form of works, a whole series of events have been organized to promote and popularize the research carried out (booklets, videos, meetings with local residents), in addition to scientific articles.
In addition to the partnership with CITERES, the Touraine geography laboratory, the project's non-academic partners include CAUE 41, CC du Grand Chambord and the Val de Loire World Heritage Mission. This project is part of the ARD Intelligence des Patrimoines (I-Pat).

APR IR VIVAMEMORI, 2018-2023
The project, co-sponsored by the Universities of Orleans (CRJP, CEDETE) and Tours (CETU ETIcS, CETU ILIAD3, CITERES) aims to produce a prototype mediation tool for the Vierzon museum via a large-format touchscreen that offers 4 itineraries (history, production, architecture, life of the company behind the museum) plus a 5th that combines the four thematic itineraries. The tool brings together and enhances the research carried out, i.e. texts and audiovisual documents gathered specifically around the town's industrial history (excerpts from interviews with former Case employees, with specialized historians, audiovisual archives from INA and Ciclic, sound documents, plans and sketches, photos, extracts from CAs, product catalogs, advertisements, etc. collected from private individuals and, above all, research at municipal, departmental and Monde du Travail (Roubaix) archives). See https://www.canal-u.tv/recherche?search_api_fulltext=vivamemori&op=Envoyer&f%5B0%5D=chaine%3A687&sort_by=search_api_relevance
Non-academic partners include the Centre-Val de Loire regional heritage inventory service, the Ciclic Centre-Val de Loire regional agency for books, images and digital culture, the DRAC Centre-Val de Loire, the Cher and Indre departmental archives, the Vierzon and Eguzon Argenton community of municipalities' museums of men's shirt-making and elegance, and the CIAP La Tuilerie of the Pays Loire-Val d'Aubois mixed syndicate.

APR IR VERDI 2022-2025
The VERDI project, co-sponsored by the Universities of Orléans (GREMI, CRJP) and Tours (CETU ETIcS) and the CNRS (CEMHTI), is a multi-disciplinary research project designed to support industries, craftsmen and artists using glass materials, as they move towards lead-free crystal and other toxic chemical elements (in application of the European Union's REACH regulation).
Partner scientific laboratories are studying glass ageing (impact of new recipes on ageing) as well as the possibilities of producing coloured glass without toxic inputs.
The CRJP is responsible for two other areas: data collection and promoting the region's glassmaking heritage. Gathering and producing documentary resources involves a number of different actions, including centralizing and organizing partner documents, identifying objects made of or using glass in the collections of the museums of France in the Centre-Val de Loire region, searching for additional documents in archives, producing socio-ethnographic films on glassworking, and collecting documents from private individuals to enrich collections. These resources will be mobilized to produce mediation tools (exhibitions, workshops, illustrations, teaching kits, etc.). The aim of the second area is also to create a regional glassmaking network by bringing together industries, craftsmen and artists who operate in a rather compartmentalized way, in order to strengthen the region's glassmaking identity.

Non-academic partners include LASALYS, New Duralex International, the Saint Gobain Archives Center, the Amboise Patrick Lepage art glassworks, the International Stained Glass Center, the Centre-Val de Loire regional heritage inventory department, the regional agency for books, images and digital culture Ciclic Centre-Val de Loire, the DRAC Centre-Val de Loire, the museums of Vierzon and Orléans, and the association Musées en Centre-Val de Loire.
