According to the story of the Roman historian Titus Livius, the Roman magistrate Appius Claudius, rejected by Virginia to whom he was enamoured, succeeded in making her a slave and gave her to one of his freed slaves. Her father Virginius chose to stab her to save her from this dishonour.
