Apollo and Daphne, by Francesco ALBANI, also known as Albano Italy, Circa 1615-1620 Oil on copper

The nymph Daphne flees god Apollo's love.

In heaven, Eros shot two arrows, one meant to spark passion the other rejection.

Only the presence of the laurel tree, on the left, indicates the end of the chase and the end of the story: in order to escape her kidnapper, Daphne will be turned into a laurel tree.

The elongated format of the painting, the alternating steps of both runners in mid-air and the fluttering of the folds with contrasting colours suggest an animated chase.
