Walking Man Egypt Circa 1800 BC. Painted tamarisk wood

This is the walking man. The statuette of this unknown man was found in his grave during excavations. He might have been a senior official of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. The deceased was represented in the action of walking. But a walk that is not natural: his back is stiff as well as his two legs. It doesn't matter to our unknown man. Indeed, for the Egyptians, representation has a magical function. The simple fact of being sculpted on the move ensures the dead the possibility to move in the hereafter as on Earth, and for eternity.
