What you need to know about student visas
To study in mainland France, you need a student visa (except for nationals of countries in the European Economic Area, Monaco, Andorra, San Marino, Switzerland and the Vatican).
For students from countries where there is a ‘Study in France’ procedure, you can visit the Campus France website www.campusfrance.org/fr
- For students from countries where there is no ‘Study in France’ procedure, you should consult your embassy's website to apply for a student visa. Please note that this process varies in length and generally takes several weeks.
For any stay of more than three months, you must obtain a long-stay visa (VLS-TS or VLS-T=) marked ‘student’ before arriving in France. Applications must be made to the French consular services in the country of residence at least three months before departure. To obtain the visa, students must provide the following documents:
- Proof of admission or pre-registration at the University of Orléans
- Proof of income: the minimum income required is set by each French embassy (approximately 615 euros per month)
- Valid passport, valid for 6 months after your planned return date
- Proof of address
Please note: Erasmus exchange students of non-European nationality must apply for a long-stay student visa. You will need to contact the French consulate in your country of residence. The residence permit allows you to travel but not to stay in France for more than 90 days.
