As cultural mediators past and present, writers, poets and translators have never ceased to renew the adventure of recreating literary works. Littératures en mutation-Écrire dans une autre langue presents a selection of exploratory authors from the Golden Age, 20th and 21st centuries who have chosen to cross a linguistic boundary in their own work. This is hardly a simple maneuver, but rather a choice to pass through the strangeness of literary language in order to renew the reader's horizons of expectation. This volume recalls the Baroque age of Luis de Góngora, who wrote a sonnet in Spanish, Latin, Italian and Portuguese, and shifts to the contemporary world by bringing together Argentinean José Luis Borges, Spaniard Jaime Gil de Biedma and Frenchman Jacques Darras, whose literary navigation is to write poems in English. Dominican novelist Julia Alvarez also reinvents her origins in English. While novelists Agustín Gómez-Arcos, Jorge Semprun, Argentinean writer and playwright Copi, Peruvian César Moro, Spaniard Juan Larrea and Chilean Huidobro switch from Spanish to French, living the destiny of a French author for a passage or a lifetime. The writing of Linda Lê, a French-speaking writer of Vietnamese origin, the creative language invented by Daniel Maximin of the West Indies, and the pleasure of the verb in Salman Rushdie's work reach the shores of Vocables sans ombres. Writing in another language cultivates literary bilingualism: the Catalan-Spanish in-between of poets Pere Gimferrer and Jenaro Talens. A creative challenge embodied in the novel Como fiel amante o la invención del Lazarillo by Hispanist and comparativist Daniel-Henri Pageaux, who invents an authorial poetics for Tormes' Lazarillo. Readers will also recall the incredible linguistic departure of Serbian-born Peruvian writer Goran Tocilovac, for whom there is no ambiguity: the language of passage is a language of love, of the song of the self in dialogue with the literary imagination.
