In 1900, Uruguayan humanist José Enrique Roldo addressed the youth of Latin America. At the age of 29, he took on the role of an old professor, Prospero, addressing his disciples. He appeals to Ariel, the genius of the spirit, against Caliban, the symbol of matter. He invites young people to take their country's destiny into their own hands, by choosing Greco-Latin values and those of 19th-century French thinkers, against the utilitarianism and mercantilism of the United States. His appeal was an immediate and resounding success, sparking off “Arielism”, a movement that would spread throughout Latin America. It is this appeal, untranslated into French until now, that we present today, followed by other texts by this author on Americanism and Latin America's relations with France. In particular, it aims to highlight the double empathy towards Spain (the “mother country”, but weakened by the war of 1898) and France, i.e., a feeling of latinity beyond hispanicity among many Latin American intellectuals. In this volume, Françoise Morcillo provides a precise analysis of the cultural and literary materials that nourished and underpinned Luis Antonio de Villena's poetic creation. She shows how the writer, who turned twenty in 1971, i.e. still under Francoism, experienced several types of dissidence, dreams of exile in France, the violent rejection of the Spanish bourgeoisie and a certain type of Catholicism, to freely choose to travel between foreign cultures, without forgetting Spanish literature, in particular that of the Golden Age, by writing poetry, translating poets (Callimaque, Joachim Du Bellay... ), composing artists biographies (Oscar Wilde, Constantin Cavafis, etc.), always linked to poetry in one way or another. The author highlights what Villena had sought out and found in these artists, and how he extracted forms from them to write poems in which he brings the creators' voices to life through his own voice, thus in a resolutely contemporary language. The result is a vast intertextual weave, as rich as it is contrasting, at times vertiginous. We see how a “contemporary humanism” is forged, how a verse by Fray Luis de León leads to becoming an “aristocrat of the word”, how reading Cavafis leads to the praise of paganism, to the presence of the street in poetry and to the amorous celebration of the male body, how Oscar Wilde, the elegant libertine, plays an ethical rather than a formal role here. Particular attention is paid to the bending of rules in the “dissident” sonnets of Villena, translator of the sonnets of Du Bellay and Michelangelo. A reception of Villena's work transmitted in a privileged relationship with the reader, celebrating the Barthian grain of voice. (4th cover Marie-Claire ZIMMERMANN)
