PAHPA ICE (Physical Activity and Health, Pluridisciplinarity Approach in Isolated, Confined Environment) is a multidisciplinary research program conducted over 4 years (2021-2025) at Concordia, the Franco-Italian research station located in Antarctica. 7 SAPRéM members are involved in this study, which is supported by the ESA and the French Polar Institute Paul-Émile Victor (IPEV). We are studying the psychological and physiological reactions of “winterers” who are exposed to extreme conditions, since they are isolated, confined and subject to the effects of altitude. Our aim is to verify the existence of the “third quarter time” phenomenon, i.e. the reaction to long-term isolation during the 3rd trimester, currently only
described from a psychological point of view. The program involves monthly monitoring of physiological (body composition, nutrition, physical activity, hormones), psychological (mood, affect) and cognitive parameters.) Data collection is ongoing.
