The habilitation à diriger les recherches [authorisation to supervise research] or HDR is the highest degree in the French higher education system.
The habilitation à diriger des recherches [authorisation to supervise research] is an acknowledgement of the high scientific level of the candidate, of the originality of his or her approach in a scientific field, of his or her ability to master a research strategy in a large enough scientific or technical field, and his or her ability to supervise young researchers. The HDR allows its holder to supervise theses as well as for the candidate to become a university professor.
The authorisation to register for HDR is granted by the Research Committee of the Academic Council.
