“Les Cordées” Plan for Success

This plan aims at promoting the access to higher education for young people, whatever their socio-cultural background is. 


“Roped Parties for Success”

The plan entitled “Les Cordées de la réussite” (“Roped parties for success”) aims at promoting the access to higher education for young people whatever their socio-cultural background, by giving them the keys to successfully enter training courses of excellence.

The University of Orléans offers 4 “cordées”:

  • Studying Humanities;
  • Studying Sciences;
  • Technology to get to the top;
  • University and CPGE (preparatory class for the grandes écoles) for students in Eure-et-Loir.

1. Studying Humanities

 

 

Partner high schools:

  • Pothier High School, Orléans
  • Voltaire High School, Orléans
  • Monod High School, Saint Jean de Braye

 

Objectives:

  • Opening high school students to the possibility of higher education;
  • Making humanities more attractive;
  • Strengthening the links between secondary teachers and higher education teachers;
  • Creating a continuity between secondary education and higher education;
  • Introducing the study of humanities and, on a broader spectrum, the training courses offered at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (UFR LLSH).


Actions and implementation period:

  • Organisation of integration days for high school juniors and/or seniors with a major in humanities;
  • Meetings with writers;
  • Screening of a movie studied in the framework of the French baccalaureate and analysis with the high school teachers and the teachers-researchers in Humanities at the University;
  • Immersion in class (observation);
  • Joint literature classes between high school seniors and first-year students in Literature.

All these actions take place between November and March.

2. Studying Sciences

Objectives:

  • Opening high school students to the possibility of higher education;
  • Introducing careers in science and research;
  • Strengthening the links between secondary teachers and higher education teachers;
  • Creating a continuity between secondary education and higher education;
  • Introducing the training courses at the College of Science and Technology (UFR ST) and promoting higher education at the University of Orléans;
  • Encouraging high school girls to study sciences;
  • Noticing as soon as possible students having an interest in scientific subjects. 

 

Actions and implementation period:

  • Organisation of “immersion at the University” days;
  • Meetings with teachers to answer high school students’ questions;
  • In-class immersion and practical work (when possible);
  • Discussion times between high school students and university students (experience feedback);
  • Campus tour in collaboration with Student Life services;
  • Distribution of communication media.

These actions take place between November and March.

Objectives:

  • Giving middle school students the ambition to study at an Institute of Technology (IUT)
  • Introducing training courses offered at the IUT and student life in general;
  • Implementing experimental measures to encourage the integration of technological high school graduates and thus respond to ministerial directives;
  • Showing high school graduates that succeeding at the IUT is within their reach;
  • Strengthening the links between secondary teachers and higher education teachers.

 

Actions and implementation period:

  • In-class immersion of high school students;
  • Visiting businesses and companies;
  • Introducing jobs or activities in companies which are not well known but which offer employment opportunities;
  • Making middle school and high school students participate in practical work where they will try scientific manipulation themselves;
  • Discussion times between high school students and university students;
  • Professional guidance (resume, motivation letter);
  • Collaborative work between middle school, high school and university students, revolving around the presentation of a company (visit, interview of professionals working there, making a report on the company and presenting it to a jury);
  • Organising themed days on jobs in management, logistics, energy… 

These actions take place between November and May.

Objectives:

  • Introducing the student social file and giving more information on ParcourSup;
  • Opening high school students to the possibility of higher education;
  • Introducing trainings at the University of Orléans as a whole;
  • Discovering university life (visiting student housing, university libraries, eating at the university restaurant).

 

 

Actions and implementation period:

  • Organising immersion days on campus;
  • Organising an immersion day on the Chartres campus (Polytech, Marceau High School, IUT)

These actions take place between November and March.
