Waste Sorting at the University of Orléans

The University of Orléans has implemented a waste-sorting system to promote recycling.
To make this possible, the University has opted for voluntary drop-off by installing sorting bins in high-traffic areas such as hallways, communal spaces, and entrance halls.
This new system aims to phase out the many single-use bins that were a major obstacle to selective sorting.

The principle of voluntary drop-off appeals to everyone’s ecological and civic responsibility.

This system simplifies waste collection and evolves with its environment so that everyone can easily deposit their recyclable waste without it being a constraint.

The Orléans University Institute of Technology (IUT) volunteered to act as a pilot site before the system was rolled out across all University of Orléans buildings.

  • Selective sorting was introduced across the different campuses in November 2022.
Yellow and green bins now allow you to sort your waste at the source for more efficient recycling.
  • Since in September 2023, additional services and faculties have been equipped.
  • With nearly 350,000 cardboard cups used each year across the university, selective sorting is a major sustainability initiative. To reduce this number, all hot-drink vending machines are now equipped to accept your own reusable cup.
  • Electrical and electronic waste (WEEE) has also been managed since July 2022 through a dedicated recycling channel within university departments and laboratories.
  • To extend the life of its furniture, the University partners with an eco-organization specializing in reuse and upcycling. This initiative gives university furniture a second life in the non-profit sector, national education, and beyond.

During this event, 249 kg of electrical and electronic waste (WEEE) were collected at the AIDE helpdesk collection point.

These items will be recycled or refurbished by NORIP, a partner company of the University of Orléans.
